To improve performance, great coaches focus on two central ideas. The first is a form of personal power and self-management. The second is the ability to think intelligently about conditions that are external to us. These are sometimes referred to as personal mastery and strategic thinking.

Personal mastery improves performance by supplying the most powerful motivation known to man. This is the attitude that controls behavior, which, in turn, produces results. The origin of this motivation is the intense natural pleasure and satisfaction resulting from envisioning what you want for and from yourself and then supplying the emotional and motivational control necessary to achieve it.
